Career guidance and transition program for Senior High Schools

A  Report on Transition Program at  Lawra  Senior High School and WA Senior High

‘Reach Out’ is an initiative of Camfed Ghana where Secondary Scholars have an interactive career guidance and counseling session with resource persons.
The purpose is to guide students study more effectively, understand the tertiary application process, gain a deeper understanding of the job market and what lies ahead after their secondary education.

Specific Objectives

1.      To gain more knowledge on effective study habits and learner types

2.      To receive information on courses of study at the tertiary as well as tertiary Scholarship opportunities

3.      To guide Secondary students identify and make informed educational, career and life decisions as they progress.    

I Dorcas Apoore and Rufinatu were the facilitators selected to go to Lawra SHS in the Upper West Region of Ghana and Wa Senior Highs. I Dorcas was the first speaker who talk on career guidance which involves the following; what is a career?, and the response was that, a career is a work in which one engage him/herself whether paid or unpaid throughout his/her life time. Why is there need for a career?, what next after SHS? And so some chose to help the parent in farms, at the market, travel to the south to look for jobs, working at the fuel station, etc. what career will you choose so that you can be a champion in it? What factors  will one have to consider in planning for  a career? The factors were identifying yourself, what do you want do and knowing the kind of education to offer to get that career etc, and been able to know who you are. The second session was on how to learn for success. And so I dealt on the following what is learning? And the responses the gave was that, learning  means having a total concentration or focus on something to acquire knowledge. But I define learning to them as a process which involves interaction that help one to obtained knowledge, skills and valve in a particular field. The four types of learning which include visual learning, auditory learning, read/write learning and kinesthetic learning . and the strategies that one has to employ in each of the four. I  concluded by saying that, one has to choose a career that will make him/her comfortable, do not rely on someone to determines a career for you, employ the best method that fit you most when learning, knowing which type of learner you are, you can make a change if you take a right decision now.
